Narex Square Blade Birdcage Awl, Narex 874710 has a blade that tapers to a fine point with a square in cross-section. As the original name suggests, it was used in the making of wooden birdcages, employed to make small hole in thin sections without splitting the wood. The birdcage awl is perfect for making starter holes for screws or nails. This is a square scratch awl made by a small Czech firm. It has a beautifully turned stained beech handle with steel ferrule and a hardened high carbon tool steel blade. Scratch Awls are ideal for quickly pre-marking for screws or even for general layout work. Works well in soft and hardwoods.
