Mortise and tenon joining has always been a difficult, time consuming process. Never again, thanks to Festool’s new Domino system. It’s ideal for making furniture frame construction, window and door construction, frame and panel construction, tables, chairs and cabinets – even face frames.
The system consists of two key components, the Domino joiner and pre-fabricated, solid Beech Domino tenons. The joiner’s revolutionary cutting method, simple indexing and adjustable mortise sizing makes flawless, repeatable cuts every single time. It utilizes unique cutters
(5, 6, 8 and 10mm) that both turn and oscillate to make crisp cuts with no kickback. An adjustable fence allows angles from 0 to 90° with five preset stops and a depth stop gives you precise adjustment for five depths. The cross stop allows the joiner to index itself for repeat hole spacing without marking your work and the trim stop is for use on narrow material with widths between 7/8" and 2-34". Finally, Domino tenons are far stronger than biscuits or dowels, have a large gluing surface area for extra strength and are 100% rotation proof.
The DF 500 Set comes in a Systainer case and includes the Domino Joiner, D5 (5mm) cutter, trim stop, cross stop, support bracket, wrench and plug-it cord.

Before I bought the Domino I dowelled all joints. Dowelling was an adequate solution but necessitated a great deal of final sanding. The Domino is about 5 times faster and reduces the amount of sanding required by at least half, easily handled by a random orbit sander.
The Domino also allows for final adjustments in the lining up of members. It takes a little bit of getting used to, but by my second job I had the kinks worked out of the process and the frames were going together quickly and accurately.
The only thing I would improve is the hold down lock for the height of cut. For some reason it wants to loosen from the setting. However the locking handle can be adjusted to allow greater tightening.
This is turning out to be one of my company's best purchases. I think it will pay for itself in another job or two. Well worth the investment.
